Vinyl gets a bad name from people who've only seen it done wrong. Nail the panels tight to the sheathing and the first 98 degree August afternoon turns your wall into a bag of potato chips. Panels have to hang: nail heads left a hair loose, ends free to slide in the J-channel as they expand. I spec a thicker panel down here, because Gulf wind finds the flimsy stuff and peels it. Most houses take two or three days. Done properly, vinyl siding installation gives you a wall you clean with a garden hose.
Fiber Cement Composite Siding
Fiber cement composite siding is cement, sand and cellulose, which is a long way of saying termites won't touch it and the Gulf sun won't cook it. It's heavy, though. A 12-foot plank is a two-man lift, and done badly you get butt joints with no flashing behind them and caulk squeezed into a gap that was supposed to stay open. Water finds that by August. Fascia And Soffit
Fascia and soffit is the trim nobody looks at until a squirrel does. The fascia is the board your gutters hang on. The soffit is the vented underside that lets your attic breathe, and around here those vents earn their keep. Block them and August humidity parks in the attic and rots sheathing from the inside out. We cut rotted board back to sound wood, check above it first, because fascia rot is usually a roof repair somebody put off, then wrap in aluminum. Gutter installation goes back last. On most homes it's a day, two if the rot traveled.
Gutter Installation
Mobile gets around 65 inches of rain a year, and it never arrives politely. Our gutter installation runs seamless 5-inch K-style aluminum, rolled on site so there are no seams to split, hung every two feet, with 6-inch trough and oversized downspouts where a big roof plane dumps all at once. Get the pitch wrong and water stands, mosquitoes move in, and the fascia and soffit behind it goes soft. Overflow splashing back will streak a brand new siding installation inside a season. Metal Roofing
A metal roof and new siding get along well, and after one August of hail and 60 mph gusts you'll understand why. We set standing seam panels with concealed clips, so there are no exposed fasteners to back out and weep rust streaks down your walls. A leak rarely announces itself. You get a coffee-colored ring on the ceiling after a Gulf storm, and by then the decking has been damp for weeks. Most roof repair I do here comes down to failed flashing at a chimney or valley, shingles the wind peeled back, or nail pops that work loose in July heat. That's usually a half-day job. It grows when the decking underneath has gone soft, and I'll show you that before I cover it back up. If water has been running down a wall, your siding will tell on it too.
Tar Shingles
Tar shingles still cover most roofs around Mobile, and there's a right way to nail them: six nails through the strip, not four driven high, or the first storm off the Gulf peels them like a bad haircut. We tear off to the deck so soft plywood gets found instead of guessed at, and most homes are dried in within a day or two. Lost a handful of tabs after a squall? I back-prime every board on all six sides before it goes up, hold the bottom course clear of the dirt, and seal the butt joints properly. Skip that and our humidity, sixty-odd inches of rain and the Formosan termites will find the soft spot by year three. Plan on repainting every five to seven years. Not every problem needs a whole wall torn off. Three cracked panels after a squall comes through the Bay, a soft spot under a window, a hole some squirrel decided was a front door: that's siding repair, and most of it we're done with in an afternoon.
The tricky part is color. Vinyl fades under ten years of Gulf sun, so a fresh panel next to old ones stands out like a Mardi Gras float on Government Street. We pull matching panels from a hidden wall and patch there instead. And we always look for rot before we close it back up.

How much does new siding cost on a house this size?
Four things move that number more than anything else: the material you pick, how much actual wall you have once we measure around windows and doors, how many stories we're working on, and what we find when the old stuff comes off. Rotten sheathing behind a leaking window changes a quote in a hurry. I price siding installation after I've walked the house and put a hand on it, not from a satellite photo.
Can you replace just one piece, or does the whole wall have to go?
One piece, often. A limb came down off a water oak and cracked two panels, we can unzip that course and swap them. The catch is color. Vinyl that's faced the sun off the Bay for a decade doesn't match a fresh panel out of the box, so siding repair on a front elevation sometimes looks worse than it did broken. Back wall, nobody's arguing.
How long does it take to side an average house?
Four to seven working days for a single story around 1,500 square feet, longer if we're wrapping, flashing and re-trimming as we go. Two stories, complicated rooflines, or a week of afternoon thunderstorms in July pushes it. You keep your doors, your power and your driveway the whole time. We just ask you to move the grill.
What's the most common mistake in a vinyl siding job?
Nailing it tight. Vinyl grows and shrinks close to half an inch across a twelve foot panel between a January morning and an August afternoon here, so every nail sits centered in the slot with about a sixteenth of an inch of play behind the head. Crews that gun it down flat get waves, buckles and popped seams by the second summer. That's not a material failure, that's an install failure.
Which siding actually holds up in Mobile's weather?
Fiber cement composite siding takes our humidity and wind-driven rain about as well as anything, and it doesn't mind heat. Quality vinyl does fine and costs less to maintain. Wood siding is beautiful on the older homes near Government Street and it will absolutely reward you for painting it, and punish you for not.
Do y'all do roofing too, or only siding?
